I think equating informational lectures, which it seems the expert you referenced was taking about, and preaching, is a little unfair. I will readily admit that I don’t remember the content of the vast majority of sermons I have heard, but sermons are about more than that. Sermons create a response in the hearer that leads them to go on and act on what they have heard. I can certainly cite many sermons where the main idea has stuck with me and motivated me to act in some way, or where the sermon was a catalyst for a turning point in my life, and I know many others who could as well. While discussion is extremely important, I think it would be foolish for us to throw preaching out completely, because preaching serves a completely different function.
