Yes they are quirky (who wasn’t at that age!!) but there are so many of our kids that are dropped off by their parents who don’t attend church. These kids need the extra time and attention! I always tried to specifically NOT hang out with my kids. My own children knew I was in there but I chose to hang out with other kids to give all of us some space. We did plan stuff together, worked on projects together, etc. and I’m pleased to see my now adult kids give back to the program that gave them so much!

Howie, You are absolutely correct. We shouldn’t be volunteering “just for our child.” Instead, we need to make sure as parent volunteers to engage fully with other students. I have told my kids at youth group I love them they are still my kids, but I am there to be a full on volunteer. It helps them to feel safe and to know that they can also reach out and build relationships with other adults as well.

Except, when they are not willing to form relationships with other kids, just their child and their child’s friends.

If a parent is only there because their kid is there, they are better off serving in another area of ministry.
