News Nugget: The day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as America’s 45th president, hundreds of thousands of people across the country—and world—marched in support of equality. Some attendees emphasized women’s health care and abortion rights, while others preached tolerance and love. Signs indicated that people would be closely watching the new administration and holding it accountable. The crowds included women and men of all ages, including vocal groups of teenagers. Although many were too young to vote in the recent election, they’re fired up about building a society that values everyone. “To use your voice…can have so much power because words have strength,” one marcher said. [tweet_dis]“Silence just means that you agree with what’s going on.”[/tweet_dis] (For additional context, watch this video of interviews with young protestors.)
Themes to Explore:
- Respect for authority (see 1 Peter 2:13-17)
- Acceptance and tolerance (see Romans 16:17-19)
- Speaking out and taking a stand (see Psalm 141:3)
Discussion Questions:
- Overall, what messages do you think the protesters sent to the new president? Respond to this statement: The marches were a respectful way for citizens to convey their opinions and disagreements with leaders.
- Why do you think the message of tolerance resonates with so many young people today? If you personally disagree with the politics of some marchers, are you intolerant? Why or why not? How can you express love to all people yet be intolerant of sin?
- If you don’t speak up against an issue, does that mean you’re in favor of it? that you’re too scared to get involved? that you need more time to make a decision? that you want to keep your beliefs private? Explain.
