Making Camp Rules Memorable

Camp_RulesWhat’s the best way to communicate the rules at camp?

You know… “the rules.”

We’ve all been sharing these rules for years:

  • “Boys are blue. Girls are pink. Don’t make purple.”
  • “Respect the facility.”
  • “Clean up after yourself.”
  • “Blah blah blah blah…”

It’s hard to capture it all in a way that students will remember. Maybe Matt McGill is on to something:

Then again, I wouldn’t go this far nor want our youth leaders to go shirtless to make a point. It’s memorable… but is it beneficial?

Feel free to argue over that. Again, that video stands out for a reason.

The real question? What’s the best way to communicate the rules at camp?

We’ve covered this on the blog before.

Now it’s your turn – any opinions, thoughts or examples?

And for that matter – what are the more important camp rules, anyway?

  1. This was hilarious an super creative! Thank you for sharing. I’m helping out at a spiritual retreat for middle schoolers with my fiance in July so I really appreciate any and all advice!! I

would love to be a positive role model for these kids. I’m making it my personal mission to really get tuned into and listening to what it is these students like/care about. I think listening to them and letting them know they are heard is a really important aspect of anything you do with a kid.

    • No doubt. I think you’re onto the best insight there, Vanessa. So much of a camp experience can be about presenting vs listening. Glad to see you’re catching the difference.

  3. I’ve wanted to do camp rules as a riff on the Directv commercials for the past year, I’m just not that creative or good with video.

Just in case you haven’t seen one of their commercials to know what I’m talking about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crg4UPhf73Y

I think camp rules like this would be awesome!
